Why Should We Study the Word of God?
Let's begin by addressing the question that lays the foundation for our venture into Bible study: Why should we study the Word of God?
In 2 Timothy 3:13-17, we find the perfect answer. This passage tells us that Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. Through the Word, we become equipped for every good work, and we are protected from the deception of the world. It's a treasure trove of wisdom, guidance, and solace, serving as our compass on life’s windy roads. And, when darkness evolves around us, a light will break through.
Psalms 119:105 proclaims, “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path”. And, as you make this commitment, remember that it's not just about studying the Bible; it's about building a deeper, more intimate relationship with your Creator, who loves you unconditionally.
Now, as we're standing on the precipice of this wondrous journey, what might hold us back?
Overcoming the Hurdles: Not Knowing Where to Begin
It's a question that often lingers in the hearts of many women: "Where do I begin?" The sheer size and complexity of the Bible can feel overwhelming, but remember, we have a God who is eager to guide us. So, let's break it down together.
Eight Effective Steps to Dive into Bible Study:
1. Implement the Desire: Start with the heart. Desire to know God more intimately through His Word. Understand that your desire to study the Bible is a divine invitation. Accept it and act on it. Pick up your Bible and go for it!
2. Pray: Seek God's guidance through prayer. Ask Him to illuminate His Word and open your heart to receive His teachings. Remember, the Holy Spirit is your ultimate teacher. You have a mighty counselor inside of you that will do its job of guiding you through this journey of divine discovery.
3. Create the Margin: By creating a time and space for Bible study that resonates with your heart and soul, you will find yourself eagerly looking forward to each intimate session. This dedicated space becomes a sacred sanctuary where you can connect with God, receive His guidance, and grow in your faith. Consider these things: a regular schedule, comfortable and quiet place, make it inviting with your favorite motivations.
4. Gather Resources: Invest in good study resources. A study Bible, commentaries, concordances, journals, and pens. Utilize technology for access to various translations and Bible study apps. The tangible and digital resources at your accesibility are endless. These have been orchestrated and gifted by God as immensely helpful tools in your spiritual growth.
5. The Actual Game Plan: Just as we plan day to day activities, create a plan for your bible study time. Decide on topics, words, books, or themes you want to explore. There are so many! Having a structured plan will keep you on track. Eyes upward towards the Lord and forward towards the future of growth and knowledge. Having a method of approach towards scripture is always a great idea. For years, I have used the SOAP Method. There’s nothing that cleanses your soul like a good SOAP bath in His word. It’s a basic plan of action that leaves room for your own adjustments as you dive into a routine. Then there is the SPECK method. I’ve used this method in addition or primarily over the last year. It challenges me to ask serious questions and examine myself within the scripture. Combing the two methods can be eye opening to the voice of God.
SOAP Bible Study Method: Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer. This method helps you systematically study passages, reflect on them, and apply their teachings to your life.
SPECK Bible Study Method: Sin to confess, Prayer to pray, Example to follow, Command to obey, and Knowledge. This method provides a set evaluation approach to studying God's Word, enabling you to deepen your understanding and spiritual connection.
6. Have Accountability: Don't walk this path alone. Partner with a friend or join a Bible study group. Sharing your insights, struggles, and progress with others can be a source of motivation and encouragement. We’re not meant to do this life alone so don’t!
7. GRACE UPON GRACE: Yes, I totally highlighted that sentence for a very important reason. If you’re anything like me, grace comes much easier when granted it to others and not myself. Understand that not every day will unfold as planned. Life gets busy, and sometimes, you may miss a day of study. You may not journal a single word or even sit in the sacred space that you worked so hard on so you wouldn’t miss a day! I understand, sister. God's grace is abundant. Pick up where you left off and keep moving forward. DO NOT STOP!
8. Finally, REFLECT & ADJUST: Periodically reflect on your Bible study routine. Is it motivating and encouraging you as it should? If not, don't hesitate to adjust your schedule or workspace to better suit your needs. Flexibility is important in maintaining a sustainable practice. As you embark on this incredible journey of Bible study, remember that you are not alone. God is with you every step of the way, ready to unveil the depths of His wisdom and love. Your pursuit of His Word is a testament to your hunger for a deeper relationship with Him.
So, sister, let us dive into the miraculously effective gift from God, our Bible, with hearts full of desire and determination. Together, we'll discover a treasure beyond measure, one that will enrich our lives and draw us closer to the One who loves us unconditionally. I don’t know about you but knowing that makes me what to share it with the world!
